Remove the Background of a Photo

It is possible to remove the background of a photo in Microsoft Word.  It is not perfect and works best if there is good contrast between the part you want to keep and the background.

Here are the steps:

  • Add a picture to a Word document (if your picture is in Photos you will need to first save it to your desktop or somewhere else on your computer)
  • Select the picture if it is not already selected
  • In the menu bar select Format Picture
  • Select Remove Background
  • Move or resize the selection box so it contains the portion of the picture you want to use
  • The shaded parts will be removed, the parts not shaded will be kept
  • If you want to make adjustments to what is removed or not removed click in the area you want to change. Keep clicking if necessary to get the parts you want
  • Click the Remove Background button again to remove the background

You can overlap pictures in your document by adjusting the Wrapping and Layer options.
